The
Raleigh DeGeer Amyx Collection, (a.k.a. American Heritage Autographs & Collectibles)
specializes in Manuscripts & Autographs and Items Owned and Used by Famous
Americans, especially of American Presidents and First Ladies, as well as
notable sports figures and also Olympics Winner’s Medals.
As you enter Mr. Amyx's private establishment, an
elegant museum of his own creation in the suburbs of Washington, DC, you pass
into a sort of twilight-zone display of presidential history. Hundreds of rare
items of historical importance, many personally owned and used by 43
American Presidents. You first encounter the framed
survey of Virginia’s Occoquan River, drawn and hand tinted by a
17 year old
George Washington in 1749, “commissioned by Lord Fairfax in the reign of the
King”. Nearby you will find manuscripts of President Thomas Jefferson, President
Abraham Lincoln, and many more including our modern day Presidents.
Another room may bring you to the
framed eye glasses
owned and frequently used by President John F. Kennedy, fortunately left in the
pocket of a secret service agent before departing for the fatal trip to Dallas;
or a
favorite cane used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, used by him during a World War II meeting with England’s
Prime Minister Churchill. Another room will bring you to an
original, signed oil
painting by President Dwight D. Eisenhower which depicts England’s Telegraph Cottage, where the General lived
and where he planned the D-Day Invasion according to his own personal
inscription on the verso of this original oil painting.
Mr. Amyx made relentless
attempts to secure written authenticity of each rare item. Many of the rare
items in The Amyx Collection came directly from White House sources who worked
in the innermost chambers of the White House, such as butlers, maids,
physicians, doorkeepers, secretaries, secret service agents, and others, and
behind each item is the personal account of the previous use of the item. A
few examples of extraordinary first hand authentication is a toolbox made for
President Eisenhower by his valet. The letter of authentication is from
the President himself in the form of a thank you note and appreciation letter.
Another example is by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt who attests that an
over-sized cup and saucer were a favorite of her husband, President Franklin
Delano Roosevelt.
Over the years, Mr. Amyx
has invited hundreds
of appreciative collectors, friends, former Presidential and White House
employees, curators, school children and other interested history buffs to his
establishment for private tours. Many out-of-towners who visit the
Nation’s Capitol call to arrange personal tours, and most always they have the
same comment: “I had no idea it was anything like all this”.
